On my pontoon I've got two batterys one just for the engine starting and the other is for my electronics. My question is what's the best and safest way to charge both batterys. Right now I've got the batterys connected letting the motor charge them. Will doing this damage my charging system? I know the motor only produces 6 amps at wot. What do I need a onboard charger isolator or what?

Re: Pontoon battery questions

Hi Tiger, welcome to iboats!!

6 amps (max) will not keep 2 batteries in tip top condition. Also, two batteries that are connected will try to equalise, the weaker of the two will kill the stronger one (especially if you have two different types). You need to isolate your batts & add a secondary charging system. There are a few ways to do this.

What type of batts? What motor? What accessories are you running? Is shore power available (either a wet berth or trailered at home)?

Being a toon boat, is there space for solar panels?

Re: Pontoon battery questions

Thanks Duraruna for the quick response: I'm running a 40Hp Johnson. My starting battery is just a automotive type but my aux battery is a deep cycle. The only big thing I'm running is a Sirius satellite radio. Yes shore power is available.

Re: Pontoon battery questions

With shore power available, I'd suggest isolating the 2 batteries(disconnect deep cycle from outboard) and Charge deep cycle w/ regular battery charger or an onboard charger if you prefer

Re: Pontoon battery questions

I have two batteries installed and use a YANDINA C100 combiner to handle the charging of BOTH batteries..I also have a I-II-BOTH-OFF battery switch which I keep in the I position. That battery I will only do the starting.. But I can use the II battery or BOTH in the event I have an issue with Battery I..
See schematics here
