I did the "set the point t0 0.022 when the piont arm is on the high spot of the crank lobe" thing. I also set the pistion on TDC on the compression stroke. The motor starts. My question is about the plate that the points are mounted on. The plate moves. Where should this plate (throttle) be when setting the points? The manual says to use a special fixture that sets on the crank but I don't have the fixture. Also does anyone know how to change the O ring that seals the shift rod? Do you have to remove the brass bushing?

Thanks,
Jess

That plate is the timing advance plate. As long as the cam follower is on the high point of the lobe, you can adjust the point gap.

Yes. What Chuck said. It doesn't matter where the plate (stator) is as long as the points are at maximum opening.

Good luck. :)

Thanks fellows for the info. The motor runs well.

On another note, does anyone know where I can get a carburator rebuild kit for this motor?

Jess

The Sea King by Gale outboards were OMC products. Sadly, I don't know which is the equivalent Johnson or Evinrude model. I suspect it was the 25 hp of that or a previous year, but I can't be certain.

Is there a model number on the motor. Not a serial number, but a model number. Check the front of the transom mount for an ID plate.

A Sierra carb kit that should (and I stress should) work is 18-7024. It works on the '54-'55 25 hp Evinrude and Johnsons, along with several other 30 & 35 horse engines in the last half of the 1950's.

I cannot guarantee this, but it should be the one.

Yup. What CAT said.

My guess is that a carb from a RD series Johnny is close enough to use, Jess.

1955 would be a RD-17, but I suspect that your Gale engine was based on the RD-16 of 1954.

Let us know the model number if you can. That would narrow it down.
