I pulled the fly wheel off to check out the ignition system, This motor is new to me. Anyways it had all new stuff. So I checked the points and they were at .013. So I filed them and reset them. It ran good at wot and it idled fine but I noticed it was loading up while trolling. When I would shut it off I would have a real hard time starting it again. Could that be caused by the points being off? I also changed the thermostat, it looked like the original one too. It was also stuck open.

assuming you set the points correctly at .020 and the plugs at .030 id say check or adjust your low speed carb adjustment when your trolling.sounds like you may be running rich .my 1957 18 hp likes to troll at exactly 3/4 from lightly seated on the low speed adjustment ,yours may be close to that .every motor likes it slightly differnt .be aware that if you go to much to the right (clockwise)you may get the motor sneezing which means your running lean which is bad ,back off a bit (counterclockwise).use the proper champion plugs also, not ngk!

So does the problem continue after the points were reset to the correct gap? The .013" gap, and the stuck open thermostat both would have been a factor in poor running, but what is it like now?

Im putting new plugs in today (j4c). It has j8c' now. Yes it was running rich due to the gas being mixed 40:1 by the previous owner. Im gonna switch to synthetic also.

I havent started it yet, gonna do that today. Im gonna run some seafoam through it also.

So I ran it today and it seems to run nice with new fuel mixed correctly. Seems to smoke less at idle. I ran some seafoam through it also, man does that stuff smoke:eek: Anyways the real test to see if it loads up on me will be when I go to the lake.
