I have a 1981 concord with the 305/228hp merc, it has the original points distributer in it and I want to put in a pertronixs or mallary HEI in . My ? is does anyone have a clue where the resister for the points are at ? I've been told that it is built in to the wiring harness on the ignition switch somewhere. Does it look like the resister they used to use on cars or is it different. Thanks for responces.

Re: points to HEI conversion

I will take a shot at this. I believe you have 2 wires to the + side of your coil.
one is a wire to the start solnoid so you get 12 volts when starting. The second is a resister wire that meets you ignition wire from the key switch. That wire is used in place of a resister. If your new distributer calls for 12 volts all the time you need to remove the resister wire and replace it with a regular wire. You might move the wire from the start solnoid to the ignition wire from the key switch.

Standard egineering for GM pre 1975. Chrysler had that resistor block bolted to the firewall.

On mine the resistor wire ran from the coil + to the el. choke, you can recognice it by its massive core, it was in the harness and had to un wrap it first to replace this wire with a regular one. I also run Hei now:)
