Points Parts - Replacement Question

Hi.

I have replaced the points, condensors and coils on my 1958 Johnson 18 hp (FD-12). In each package containing the parts for the points there was a little fuzzy / felt pad, maybe 1/4" x 1/2". What is this and where does it go? I didn't see anything like it during tear down......but I did notice a very small amount of spongy-like material sticking off one of the coil screw mounts and generally towards the center shaft but there was barely anything left of it. Might this "pad" be a replacement for that?

Thanks for your help.

Yes, that is a wick replacement. It is a lubricant designed to rub against the cam that opens/closes the points in order to prevent the fiber rubbing portion of the points from wearing out.

Thousands of parts in my remaining stock. Not able to list them all. Let me know what you need and I'll look it up for you. Visit my eBay auction at:

Thanks for the quick response. So it seems that the pads do not have any lube in them, but is their purpose to evenly spread grease around the shaft? Also, where do I attach them? Thanks

The pads should be contained in a sealed cellophane packet, and if so, it's lubricated. Should it not be, put a few drops of oil on it.

Remove the coil that the original pad is under. Remove the pad from its holder. Install the new pad in the holder and reassemble as required.

(Magneto & Driver Coil Alignment)
(J. Reeves)

To align the coils properly, have the metal vertical portion of the coil yokes aligned with the inside edge of the bevel that exists on the top portion of the aluminum seat upon which the coils sit. This creates the proper distance between the coils and the flywheel magnets. Faulty alignment creats friction and the yokes of the coils heat up, turn blue and expand.
