I have replaced points, condensor, and coils on this 10h.p. Sportwin. When I installed it back on the motor with the cam in place I tried to adjust the points to .020 with the flywheel off according to the manuals directions. After many attempts I was unable to get the points to open enough to .020. (Cam at highest point) When turning the adjustment screw it seemad as though it wanted to push the points closed furthur than open. Upon removal I inspected the points to the old points. It appears as though the new contacts are twice as thick on the moving arm of the points.

Are these the wrong points? Are later model tungsten points thicker?

Maybe the older ones are just that worn down? I shouldnt have to file these right out of the box!

Can anybody help? I am stuck on this one and cannot figure out this simple problem!!!

Thanks

Mike

It sounds like you may be bottoming out the adjustment screw. Back off the hold-down screw on the points, and give the adjustment screw a complete revolution counter-clockwise. Adjust the points in, and out with the hold-down screw left loose. This should give you a better understanding of how it works. If you have the correct points, you should have plenty of adjustment. New points never need filing, or dressing. Get back to us with what you find.

The high point of the cam would be when the flywheel key is aligned with the fiber rubbing portion of the points.

The OMC part number for the point set is 580148.

Ditto on R.Johnson's reply.

I did this and still could not get them to adjust open enough. I think that I have been sent the wrong points. They seem twice as thick as the ones removed. Could the years after 1969 be different only in the thicknes or depth of the point conectors?

Thanks

MIke

Try this, put the old points back, and see what they will adjust to. If you can bring them into adjustment. The new set can't be the correct one's.
