The neat thing about point/condenser ing. is you CAN work on it in the water... (Most elec. units you replace or replace parts). I know points are a pain but I'd leave'em for this reason (I carry a spare points set up in my boat just for that reason). Just my .02 worth.

I agree with Rex and Seaboo. I would leave the points. I would tune it up and change the wires. I think you will be happy with it. When they're right, I swear they start easier than new ones.

Good luck!

Got it and enough said, thanks. I am a diesel mechanic by trade and points to me are greek but if they are the best bet on this motor then I will just replace them with new and put it on the water. :) :)

TONY H,
I work on real diesel powered stuff. Road trucks are my game and they do not use a glow plug sys on large diesel engines. It is all ran off of fuel rates and timing.

Re: POINTS? I WANT TO RID OF THEM

I wouldn't say that all big diesels don't have glow plugs. I turned a wrench or two on the big stuff while in the Army, and it all had glowplugs. Our M2s had 900 cubic inch Cummins V8 turbo deisels, and them things would NOT start in 0 degree weather without the plugs. Its funny that points are greek, considering the complexity of a deisel injector pump and how critical timing is on them. Electronic ignition is fine, but in my opinion, points are the way to go for something that can leave you out in the middle of the lake because of a black mystery box that just won't work no matter how many colorful expletives you scream at it (Been there, Done that). Anyway, good luck...
