I do not believe there are points on a 1975 model 7.5 HP.----But what is your serial # and is the powerhead a 75 or an older unit ?----Any pictures of your powerhead ?

If a man has a Mercury 7.5 that has points, and a 1975 Mercury 7.5 does not use points, the conclusion might be that the man does not have a 1975 Mercury 7.5.

But he might still need points.

A Serial Number is the best way(and in some cases, the Only way) to get the correct Parts Listing for Mercs

The 7,5 Hp Merc 75 was introduced in 1969 and it had the Thunderbolt phase maker ignition system.
It uses points in that system.
In 1974 and up the 7,5Hp (Merc 75) and also the 9,8Hp (Merc 110) had Thunderbolt breakerless ignition system.
In this case the year is not right, it might be a 1973 year model or earlier.
Blue banded engine was from 1972, before they were red banded from 1970.
1968 and 1969 red banded with some silver/crome in the decals.
The owner have to check the serial number and check out the part number for the points.
Look at Mercrusierpartsdotcom if they are available.
