Point setting vs timing

Hello! I have acquired a 1963 Gale Sovereign 40 hp( 40dle17). This was the first ,and last year of the point cam cast into the crank stub. My question is, when I use my " buss box" to locate the timing marks on the mag base, and inner flywheel to set the proper timing, how do I achieve the proper point gap of .020, with out changing the timing by adjusting the point gap. I have the condenser connected to the points, hooking my buzz bos to the ignition switch leads coming from the points. Thanks ,Greg

the gap itself is not all that critical... was is critical is to OPEN at TDC. test with condenser disconnected !!!

I believe Gale is cousins of E/J outboards so the timing tool would help you work on the " gap"
(look at it as a skinny flywheel to duplicate the FW's marks ......allowing easy access to the points for proper ajustement)

this video may help give you the concept. " Gale experts" can chime in

99.9% of the Time, setting New Points @0.020" will get you the Correct Timing. Using a Flat Feeler Gauge on used Points, all bets are off, and the Timing Marks and a Continuity Meter/Light are a better choice

Correct.----You are timing the breaker point opening to get maximum spark intensity.----Actual gap does not matter.----Rest if the timing is looked after.----A simple concept much misunderstood.

The timing fixture is nothing but a --" dummy flywheel "---The flywheel on the motor can be used to time the breaker points.----Just takes a little longer.

As long as I'm at it I'm probably going to replace the upper crank seal. This crankshaft has the points cam cast into the the crank stub.( kinda like the late '50's merc mk 28a) . Anyone know the correct SKF seal number for this application?
