Plugs keep fouling

I have a 1975 70hp Evinrude. I replaced the plugs and it ran great! Took the boat out today, ran fine then later started acting real sluggish. I got her home and the plugs were fouled again. What would cause this? Maybe my oil to fuel ratio? supposed to be 50:1 (16oz - 6gal. If i cut this back some, would this stop the fouling? Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

I certainly wouldn't cut back on the oil. Are the plugs the correct heat range and gapped to specs? Do you spend a lot of time at slow speeds, trolling or what not?

No sure don't. I don't do very much trolling. I bought NGK plugs. I went to there web site, and they have a section where you can check what plug goes with what engine. It also shows the proper gapping for the engine. So I am not sure what else it could be. I do know, that when i pull the plug, there is a lot of oily gas that drains out.

You may be running the carb(s) way too rich. Try adjusting the mixture, and see if that helps. Are you getting a good fat spark on all plugs?

Check to see if the motor is actually warming up. A stuck or missing thermostat means that the motor is running cold and can lead to fouled plugs. Good luck

After you have found the cause, add some carbon guard to the mix. Our trolling buddies say the carbon guard surrounds the soot and emits them and they run 3 times longer until the plugs get fouled. You could also buy the special Evinrude synthetic 2 stroke oil that is made for the Ficht motors that already has carbon-x in it. It's about $22. per gallon. This is after you get rid of the rich running factor.

I had notice that there were a few more replies to my questions. But they did not show up on the board. If this was you, please post again. I value all opinions.

Thanks,

Jim
