Plugging exhaust tips when installing y-pipe.

I'm getting ready to install a y-pipe to reduce the noise of my through transom exhaust system. At this point I really don't want to remove the exhaust tips and glass in the hole, encase I decide to install a "captains choice" system in the future. So my question; is it possible to just plug/cap the 4" exhaust tips or do I need to remove and glass the holes? If it is possible to cap them, where can I find the caps/plugs. The location of my tips are below the waterline. This boat is trailered and not left in the water for extended periods.

Thanks,
Bill

Sure you can cap them off from the inside as long as it doesn't get in the way of anything else. There are rubber pipe caps you could put inside. Google should come up with some caps if you measure the pipe.

Sure, I did the same thing last year. You can buy 4in fernco rubber caps with clamp. The caps won't fit on the tips alone (they are too big, 3 in are too small), so leave the rubber exh hose on the pipes and then fit the cap over the rubber hose...it will fit snug, then tighten clamp somewhat, but don't overtighten. It works fine. Your exhaust tips are probably above the waterline anyway, so you are just trying to keep water from splashing in when coming off plane. If your tips are below the waterline then I would not do this.

Thanks for the advice. My tips are below the water line.
