I have a 2000 25hp mercury outboard that appears to have a plugged high speed jet due to gas that had sat to long in the tank. I have cleaned and flushed everything up to the carburator but the engine still bogs down when put into gear. Do I have to remove the carburator from the engine to get to the jet for removal and cleaning? is there another cleaning method that i can try before removing the carburator? thanks

Re: plugged high speed jet

Howdy, DYancey.

Bogs when put in gear? Have you verified that both cylinders are running?

Check that first. Just short out each plug and see what happens to idle speed. If there is no change that is a dead cylinder.

If both are running, then remove, dismantle and carefully clean the carb.

You will need a shop manual and a carb overhaul kit. Get them first.

If you do have a dead cylinder, check spark to the dead cylinder. Got spark? Run a compression check and let us know what you found.

Good luck. :)
