LOL, I saw this first hand yesterday....our boat is grounded until I get the tires replaced on the trailor (suddenly spliting along the seams...only 2 yrs old...) so we went back to our old bank fishing spot, near the ramp and watched as two nice fellows in a fiberglass fishing boat took off in search of fish... They were "loud" talkers and we could hear them talking about where to go and what fish they would catch....got about 100 feet and I heard one make a joke about the plug...(the owner had left his out recently on a trip by his lonesome)....was about 3-4 minutes later and here they came, bilge pump throwing water out the side and looks of frustration....yep.....no plug...they got the boat out of the water and even with the bilge pump working pretty well and water coming out the plug hole it took a while to empty out. They were pretty good sports about it and went back to fishing after an old timer "highly suggested" putting a couple of them closer than the truck....Can't laugh TOO much as we will fall victim one of these days ourselves....but I did find it funny they were talking about it after they launched but did not check it until farther out on the water....

This is my first year owning a boat. on my 4th trip out I decide to take my 16 year old daughter, and 14 year old son fishing. Well we pulled into our first fishing spot caught a few fish in the first few minutes we was there, all of a sudden my daughter ask why water is coming up out of our floor drain for. I turned on the bilge pump for a few minutes, and it is pumping water out good, but the water in the floor of the boat is getting deeper. I look around wondering WTH is going on, finally bend over the transom of the boat reaching down in the water trying to find my drain plug. (Which wasn't in the hole). I being embarassed told my daughter to open up the glove box and hand me the plug. A few minutes after getting the plug back in, and the bilge pump running we was sitting high and dry again. After that, I now have two spare plugs that I carry with me, and I always double check making sure I put the plug back in while I am taking my transom straps off the back of the boat before putting it in the water. :D

Ah yes, a story that is often repeated over many decades! I first witnessed it myself in the 1960's (which is why my plug is either in the hole or hanging from the steering wheel on a bright orange ribbon!)

BTDT too. Or maybe I should say BTDT TWO. Twice I've had to go over the side in 50 deg water to put the plug in. And when the water temp is 50 deg, and the air temp is 50 deg and the humidity is at least 90%, and you don't have dry clothes. . . It's friggin cold!

I now have a printed checklist that I go through before launching. I can't put the plug in before leaving the house because here in Califorlornia it is illegal to tow your boat with the plug in it.

plug goes in first before you unhook any tie downs. I made the same mistake once but thats all it took to teach me. One da we had been on the lake all day anchored and swimming. I got in the boat and there was water throughout the boat about an inch over the whole deck plus the engine compartment and ski locker was full. She was about to sink so i flipped the bilge pump on and of coarse it decided to not work. I tried to start her up and there was so much water in the boat that the engine would not run. So i had a buddy pull me back to his trailer cause it was much closer than mine. we pull out my 18 ft boat on his 14 ft trailer the tires barely held the weight. come to find out the u joint bellow had split sometime that day and been leakin who knows how long. just thankful i decided to get back in the boat when i did. and for my buddy. Always good to go boating with a buddy so one can pull the other back to the dock.

Seems pretty stupid now but back when i was in high school about 12 years ago. I had an old 14 foot flatbottom we used to run trot lines with. One day we get out there and we have no plug. Needless to say we stuffed one of our socks in the hole and off we went. (the battery for the trolling motor was from our truck) Crazy but it didnt take on that much water and we was in and out fine.

Now I have a pontoon and even though it has no plug about a minute after i put it in the lake i get that scared feeling "oh no I forgot to put the plug in"

I keep my drive down. I cannot pull it out of the garage without putting it up. The rule; if the drive is down, the plug is not in. If you raise the drive, put the plug in. This has worked for us for going on 12 years.:D

Even my youngest (4) will ask at the ramp, as she is turning on the blower, if the plug is in. It's amazing how they pick up on things:).

But, so I don't sound like I have never done anything stupid, there is a reason we came up with a plan...I have had my share of mishaps, I even learned the hard way to keep an extra plug or two in the boat.

I ALWAYS put the plug in BEFORE I hook up to the truck... That way... When wifey says, Is the plug in??? I can say that in this instance I am right ALL THE TIME!!! Rare moments of righteousness!! Boo Yeah!!! :D

Happy boating!!!

Did it once on when I had Seadoos. My son asked me after I parked the truck and trailer why he couldn't start the doo - I knew immediately what happened. Luckily a guy had just launched his and allowed me to put it on his trailer while draining it out.

Was at Lake Mohave and slippped the doo's overnight. Found 1 of them filled with water. Apparently they had someone going through the slips at night and pulling plugs. Had to pull the it onto the dock to drain it.

With the boat (had it for a couple of months now) - I took everyone's advise on here. I put it in drawstring bag and wrap it around the throttle lever. If it the bag is still there - I gottsa problem.

I do have to say my wife was at Walmart - said hey they have a whole boat section. She came home with a plug and said can't hurt to have an extra. Pays to marry a smart one.

I'm hopefully now in the group that has done it, and not the lying about it or the gonna do it group.

here in Califorlornia it is illegal to tow your boat with the plug in it.

Why is that?

Wait, I have a theory. Because you may be hauling water around in the bilge and this would decrease fuel efficiency? I googled it, but couldnt really find any reason for it. Just my guess.

Dj - stayed in Laughlin (can't beat the hotel prices) and launched out of Katherines Landing. Saw an awesome monsoon blow through one night - saw it from the hotel.

Live up near Thousand Oaks - work in Camarillo - not to far from Oxnard. Take it you don't live there now.

I keep 2 extras inside the boat, 1 in the SUV. I havent been a boater for long, but I haven't had the priviledge of joining the PLUG group just yet.
