OK - I don't know if this should really be in Electrics, but it relates to a Mercury, so here goes.

I have a rather old, but mechanically sound 70HP Mercury which I am refurbishing the electrics (new stator, trigger, switch box, Harness etc), I can't bear to leave the old plug leads as the only bit of electric string untouched.

Problem is that you can no longer buy auto HT lead by the foot in the UK, they are all custom made silicone sets for specific vehicles.

Looking at the existing cable it's wire cored and I'm currently replacing it with silicone / carbon fibre leads taken from a nearest auto set I could find.

I'm expecting this to be a bonus in that it should reduce interference on the VHF, but am I doing the right thing here or should I be seeking out some wire cored leads as replacements ?

Thanks Rodbolt,

I'm using a new set of BUHW plugs, but my problemm is that it's become very difficult (in UK at least) to source anything but silicone leads at all.

Check small engine repair or marine engine shops for the wire. The metal core stuff lasts a lot longer (often 50+ years), and the suppressor stuff may cause problems.
IMO - replacing old working metal core wires with new carbon core is degrading the igntion system. And I'm your classic form over function guy.
