Hi All

I have been experiencing an intermittent problem with my trim tilt on my 2000 90hp Yamaha. Sometimes when I trim the motor up some and then leave it, it won't go down when I hit the down button. I can hear the relay click, but no trim motor operation. If I go up a little more, then down again, it "usually" will work.

After doing some research here, it seems that the likely problem is the trim relay or the trim switch. Tonight I finally had the problem happen at home (after a trip), so I grabbed my volt meter and tested the following:

1) I disconnected the 3 wire connector between the relay and switch. I tested both the up and down and each showed 12.5v when my wife hit the trim switch in the respective directions. So, the switch must be ok, right?

2) After reconnecting the above connector, I checked the down (green) wire/connectors coming off the relay to the trim motor. Wife hits the down switch, the relay clicks, and viola, 12v. So the relay must be ok, right?

So based on these tests, am I correct in that I have a problem with the trim motor? Any ideas on what's wrong?

Many thanks for any suggestions
Bud

hello
on the two wire system when the relay triggers for down its true you should have 12v on the green down terminal. however the ground path for the motor is through the blue wire on the up solinoid. at rest the output terminals are normally grounded. this allows for polarity reversing to control which way the pump motor runs.while testing for proper voltage use the opposite output terminal as your ground point.

rodbolt comes through again!

I tested as described and no juice - bad relay. Thanks for the clear description on how it works - I should have realized it with only 2 wires going to the trim pump.

Seems surprising to have part failure on a 3 yr old yami, but at least a new relay is cheaper than a rebuild.

Again, many many thanks

Bud
