Over the last 2 weeks I have posted that my drive was skipping. I have since removed it seperated it and checked everything I could to no obvious cause. Put it all back together again.

It:

Runs mint on the hose, and on the lake at idle and low RPM - under 1500. After that it skips, no bang, the motor and O/D jump like a skip. I changed the plugs last night (after reading Don S. say that the fogging oi isn't good for the plugs). Started cleaner but problem still exists. I had removed them and sanded them by hand to clean them up before.

I pulled the dist cap and scraped the contacts as they were a bit dirty, and the tip of the rotor where it connects to the coil wire post. This made it run worse. It's skipping all over the place now.

You could say I narrowed it down to an engine miss at this point. I stopped by the local parts store and they will have a cap and rotor in for me in the morning. I have no dwell meter so I'm not going to do points unless this solves the problem. (I'll do them then as it is obvious this boat hasn't seen a tune up in a bit).

My question is, does it sound right that an old cap could cause this type of problem? If so, what else do you recommend looking at / replacing while I'm here. I really want to get back out as I have missed 2-3 weeks from this already. Thanks to all of you that have helped. I have learned a great deal, and know that I still know nada!

Cap could have a crack in it and letting the spark go elsewhere but I would certainly buy/borrow a dwell meter and replace those points and then check/adjust the timing.
