Please someone help me by answering this question. i just bought a new 150 V6 mercury "2000' model outboard. I have about 6 hours on the motor and have been following the correct break in procedures. When I put my hand on the water coming out of the t-tale, I can only hold it there about 2 seconds because of the temp. being very hot. I called the dealer and they told me this was normal and the water should be around 140 degrees and I would't be able to hold my hand on it very long that Mercury's run on the hot side. Not satisfied with this response, I called a independent outboard mechanic and he told me that I should always be able to hold my hand in the t-tale water. I owned a OMC before and the water was never this hot. I then preceded to call Mercury Marine themselves and the service tech. told me the same thing that my dealer told me and added that if the overheat alarm didn't go off at any time don't worry about it. The overheat alarm has never gone off and I know it works because it sounds when I turn the key on to start it. When flushing it with ears, I can hold my hand on the water coming out of the exaust through the prop, it's just warm. I just spent big bucks on this motor and don't want to damage it. Please suggestions!!!!

It depends on how the engine is plumbed. It the water is pumped out of the pisser before it go's through the block like on an OMC it will run cold. Some merc's are this way, but most pump the water through the powerhead before the pisser and it's hot. Pull the cover and follow the water lines it should tell you. Another sure sign is it will take 30-40 second for it to start pissing if it runs through the powerhead first. Dunk

One good thing about the hot water is that if you are ever tagged by a sting ray, the hot water will be most welcome. Here in Florida, the on-site quick pain reliever is to mix some hot water with sea water and pour over the wound - heat causes welcome pain relief.

Do remember the dilution so that you don't parboil yourself! Hope you never need this, but it seems to be the one good use of the hot water.
