I have an old merc 115hp inline six that had the lower unit busted, after some difficult searching I found a compatible lower unit and replaced it with a used one, the thing is that 5 months later the one that I replaced it with also busted. Now I am stuck with a lower unit that needs replacement parts and I have no idea what the serial number from the outboard it came off of is since I bought it used at a boat shop out of town. I even digged out the receipt and called the shop hoping they could help but they had no such information. Is there any way to identify a lower unit or parts inside without having the outboards serial number or am I SOL.

Hi Burzo.
Does the reverse gearhave a ball bearing.
Or does it have a bushing that it slips in to
with oil groves cut in it. Does the skeg drop straight down or is it swept back?

corm

The skeg is swept back. Im not sure about the reverse gear having a ball bearing, I have to check. The pinion gear and the forward gear are what are busted. I have parts from another lower unit though that I bought at a shop. The lower unit has a messed up drive shaft and housing so I bought it cheap thinking i could use the internal parts but the mechanic working on my outboard says that the gears are different that the teeth on one lower units set are straight and that the other ones are spiral. Does it matter though because all the internal parts should match because they came off the same lower unit(the one bought cheap with the messed up drive shaft and housing). The things I would be substituting is the housing and a compatible drive shaft.
