I have a 1988 Mercruiser 5.0. Last weekend I went out and when coming in the starter started spinning. When I removed the exhaust manifold to replace the starter I noticed they were old, rusted and corroded. I then took out the spark plugs and on the starboard side water came out of the spark plugs.

I replaced the starter, exhaust manifolds and risers and spark plugs.

After replacing all of the above the motor started and ran. I shut it off and went to restart the motor again and I could tell the same thing was happening. I removed the spark plugs again and on the starboard side the plugs have water again.

No water is in the oil.

Any suggestions?? The only other thing I can think would cause this would be if the block was cracked but there is no water in the oil so I am stumped.

Head gasket? Water in the fuel?

If the head gasket was blown would there be water in the fuel?? I always thought blown head gasket would create water in the oil.

Not if it doesn't get past the rings and is isolated to to combustion chamber.

Water in the fuel would be entering from the carb. Look for water in the float bowls, or the fuel filter.

Could it be anything else.

Do a leak down test to eliminate some possibilities like head gasket or cracked head/block.

The head gasket was not the problem now the guy from basic power i got the new exhaust manifolds and risers is saying the flapper in the y pipe is causing water in all 4 cylinders.Does anyone know if he is telling me the truth. If so which flappers do i need for a 1988 5.0 mercruiser.
