I have a 96 Johnson 88spl. At the end of last summer I had a new impeller and thermostats put in (one of the old ones stuck) ran great. Well made my first trip this year to the lake and it over heated on me after running a few minutes. The telltale hole was flowing water very good. Could one of the new thermostats went bad in that short of time? Or could it have been some thing else?? Thanks for any help!

Re: Please help!! Question about thermostats

It could be a defective thermostate, if it is, only one head should be hot. It could also be a defective over heat buzzer or more likely a sender in the head, in which case your motor may not have really overheated. I would run it again and feel the heads as the motor warms up. They should be warm and not burning hot, if one is noticably warmer than the other than that one may have a bad thermostat. If both the same, I would replace the sender for the temp buzzer.
