OK heres the scenario, bought the boat used from an older man that apparently hasn't used it very much and when I first got it I ran it several times on the lke with absolutely zero issues then all of the sudden it would just fall flat on its face out of nowhere and just would run like it was only running on 2 cylinders ,but then after a few minutes it would just run perfect again so we carried on,then after about the 3 rd trip out I noticed the tachometer would stop working and come back to working just random,so the last time me and my son took the boat out everything ran perfect at first and the issue started again with the no power again but this time it shut off and never started again and we had to troll back 6 miles to the dock luckily we had 2 big batterys-so heres what has been done after testing the stator, trigger and voltage regulator(which was the original see through one and it was clearly melted solder inside of it)-I pulled the flywheel and observed a blowout on the stator melted pastic-testedtrigger which came up incorrect voltage and voltage regulator was clearly bad-so today I put a brand new stator a brand new trigger and a brand new voltage regulator and still NO SPARK-We have disconnected the kill wire from the switchbox still no spark-have tested the keyswith and still no spark and then called cdi and went through a test of the switchbox with a simple multimeter and after the test they said that the switchbow wasgetting power but I don't think we could test the output of the switchbox as I don't have a dva but we did some sort of test to every stud coming out of the switchbox and the guy from cdi said that it passed those test which I think he said was a test of the diodes inside the box if I remember correctly at this point I want to pul my hair out -could a faulty regulator have really taken out my stator, trigger and switchbox but why would the test of the switchbox diodes all check out properly but could it still be no good---PLEASE HELP-ALL INFO IS GREATLY APPRECIATED

Okay, I see you haven't receive any replies, so let's see if we can offer some ideas. I few things would help isolate your problem(s). What model, year is the engine?A 40HP Mercury is pretty much generic. There are tons of 40 HP Mercury's out there. So we need the model, year, and even serial number so we are all on the same engine. However, since you have seen a few electronic parts melted and sold joints bubbled, it sounds like something was really hot and heat can cause a lot of parts to fail. Post some more info. JMHO!
