He
y everyone! Since I got my boat a few months ago this site has helped me get everything fixed up! Almost!

If anyone here could please help, I'd appreciate! My unit is having trouble... Seems to go into first and run there pretty well.. However, when - throw her in reverse the engine dies. This engine gets positive comments from everyone and I doubt its the engine. So far I have accepted I will need a new shift cable... A neighbour did some tests and figures the drive is stuck too far in reverse and bogs the engine down when I try to go.... And from reading on here its likely the shift cable... So here is my question... Is it? Haha

I have a pre-alpha mercruiser leg, and last week a friend and I replaced the impeller... When we were doing this, my friend (slightly buzzed) starting turning the shift mechanism in the drive showing what It did... Problem I am realizing now is we didn't shift it into forward and then turn the mechanism clockwise and make prop counter clockwise to ensure it was all the way in forward during re-instal. What I'm wondering is if it is possible that this is my problem other than the shift cable? Would sure make my life easier but ill be working alone today and it was a big enough pain to get the drive back on with the two of us.

Any opinions? Is this even possible? I didn't test reverse out much before this happened so I have no reference point...

Please help!

If it wasn't locked in forward and the shift handle in forward you may have bent the shift dog. you have to look under there. Dog and shoe should be facing straight forward when both are in forward. Maybe got lucky, usually they won't shift at all or only one way if assembled wrong. The engine dying going into reverse is typical of a stretched lower shift cable, or out of adjustment on a new one. Download the manual from the adult's only sticky and follow the adjustment procedure. Remember, final adjustments are made on the water.
