PLEASE HELP, MERCRUISER D7.3L/270 TURBO DIESEL

I AM CHECKING ON A SEA RAY 290 SUNDANCER WITH THIS ENGINE , BUILT 95 WITH DUO PROP STERN DRIVE.BOAT IS LIKE NEW BUT I HAVE HEARD THAT THIS ENGINE HAS BEEN PRODUCING ALOT (AND EXPENSIVE)PROBLEMS .<br /><br />ENGINE NOW HAS 520 RUNNING HOURS . ANY EXPERIENCE WITH THIS ENGINE ? <br /><br />THANKS IN ADVANCE

It's the same engine that is in the Ford Powerstroke pickups.

Forgot to add that it is also the same engine known as the "444E" in International medium duty trucks-4700 Series.

Some related thoughts on your Diesel. Are there enough around to get a good opinion? Hear say is not reliable. How many hours of operation before it burns a quart of crankcase oil. If you ever need a rebuild how much is it to have a scrap Ford truck engine flown in from the U.S. {assuming its the same} If your alternative is gasoline then calculate your annual savings using 40% less fuel. If its a Ford parts, should be reasonably priced. A diesel is barely broken in at 500 hrs.

THANKS FOR THE ADVICES . INDEED HAIR SAY CANNOT BE RELIABLE. WHEN I SAW THE BOAT I IMMEDIATELY PHONED MY MERCRUISER ENGINEER TO HAVE HIS OPINION , AND HE WAS THE GUY WHO GAVE ME A VERY BLACK PICTURE ON THIS ENGINE.<br />NOW , AFTER YOUR ADVICES , I UNDERSTAND THAT THE BASE ENGINE IS A VERY COMMON AND WELL TESTED ENGINE USED IN TRUCKS AND THEREFORE CANNOT BE SUCH A FAILURE AFTER ALL.TRUCK ENGINES USUALLY DO NOT BRING SO MANY FAILURES BECAUSE THEY ARE USED BY PROFESSIONALS , NOT HOBYISTS LIKE ME WHO A DOWN TIME FOR 7 DAYS OR 1 MONTH DOES NOT REALLY MEAN ANYTHING APART OF LOSS OF MY PLEASURE BOAT.THIS ENGINE BLOCK FM U.S. IDEA SOUNDS NICE IF WORSE COMES TO WORSE.<br /><br />THANKS A LOT .
