I have a 1988 17 foot bowrider with a 120 HP OMC stern drive that weighs about 1800 pounds dry weight. Anyways, when it was new, they gave us a 5HP Force for pretty cheap. I dont remember exactly what went wrong with that, but about 5 years ago or so it stopped running and wasnt worth it to fix. There was probably less than 20 hours total on that thing but I am sure since it was hardly ever used, my dad didn't even think of the need to maintain it. I do recall it being sufficient for trolling.

So anyways, I have been looking to get a new one now because the electric I have been using for trolling is great, but only lasts a few hours, and when it isnt windy. I think I am set on getting a 4HP 4 stroke Yamaha with the long shaft. My bracket goes down to where there is about 13 inches from the top of the bracket to the water line, so I figure the longer shaft will be best. I like the fact that the motor has the internal tank as well as the adapter for an external tank. I just want your guys opinion to make sure I am getting the right motor for trolling or to get back to shore if my main one fails (which I have almost needed a few times!). I am almost always in fresh water (occasionally go in the salt) and actually don't go trolling that much. I just want to have it to know I can get back if my main breaks down and I am several miles up lake somewhere. Only negative thing I have heard about one cylindes is that they vibrate, but is it really going to be that much of a problem? Others have said this is a very quiet motor. I mean I am sure it is a lot quieter than that old Force we had, and I dont remember that being too loud. A place is getting in some 2005's in a couple weeks for $995 and that is the best deal I have found. I thought about the 6 HP 2 cylinder, but I didnt really want to spend $1600. Ok sorry this is so long, but I would appreciate any opinions you have. Thank you.

I have a very similar setup. A 16ft bowrider with a 3.0(140 OMC) and a 4 hp Evinrude two stroke as a kicker. The kicker will troll well. Maximum speed is about 3 to 3 1/2 miles an hour.

I think, in the long run, you'd be happier with the 6hp or even larger if back-up power is a concern.

You'd have to work a 4hp pretty hard (high RPM) for your needs. The 6hp, not so hard. So while the $600 differance might seem like a lot, for the added performance and longevity of the larger engine it may well be worth it.

Just my 2¢

Other concern about the 6HP is that it weighs 85 pounds. My motor bracket has a max 15HP rating, but it is pretty old so I am sure that is a 2 stroke rating. Don't know if that could handle that much weight. Would any 2 stroke 2 cylinder be quieter than a 4 stroke 1 cylinder?

Dan, check on the Evinrude E-Techs. They are new design 2 strokes.
Other wise take a look at Nissan or Tohatsu. They are light wt for thier size.
I think your bracket would do great w/o any concerns up to about 8 HP. That really opens up your market.

You only get 3 MPH out of yours? Hmmm, my electric pushes it that fast.

Smallest Evinrude I saw when I looked was 40HP. Ok so I noticed a 6HP 2 stroke Johnson for $1200 and an 8HP 2 stroke Johnson for $1300. Would those be a better choice? I am not as concerned with fuel consumption because I am sure a 3 gallon tank would last a day of trolling on one of those, wouldnt it? I just want it to be quiet. These only weigh 60 pounds so they are about as much as the 4 stroke 4 HP.

Re: Please help me with a new kicker motor

I bought a Nissan 6 hp 4 stroke long shaft in April
this year. Its weight is 59 lbs, its a single cyl.
I have more than 100 hrs on it so far and it runs
great. It does vibrate more than a 2 cyl, but it
is a compromise over a heavier motor. Its noise
level doesn't bother me. And it has that little
extra punch if you need a little more power if
your main motor fails.

When you say vibrate, does it shake the whole boat or what exactly do you mean? Sorry, I don't have a lot of experience with outboards.

Re: Please help me with a new kicker motor

It doesn't shake the whole boat. But it does vibrate
enough that I needed to modify my steering linkage
from it to the main motor, to keep it from rattling
the linkage when running at low speeds with the
small motor.

So if its just going to be a kicker motor on an external bracket and just going to be steered by the tiller, then it is no problem, right?

You should be alright, you may need a e-zy steer
rod to steer from your I/O motor to your kicker
if its on a drop down style bracket.
