Hey folks,

First time post for me here.

I have a nice little old boat, 1977 20 ft Grady White in very good semi-restored shape. I LOVE THIS BOAT!

The engine is a 1984 220 HP Yamaha. Now, I realize the engine might be a little tired, but everybody tells me to keep running it until it gives out. It NEVER does! Recently, I had it serviced and the shop guy told me there was no corrosion in the engine at all- Same thing with the drive unit. And the compression on the pistons is fine.

So, here is my problem: When I try and start the engine, it fires up with no problem. But the second I let go the ignition key and it pops back the center position, the engine shuts off.

Initially, I thought it was a bad key switch, so I changed it and put a brand new one on, same problem is occurring. So I went to the engine and by-passed the Microcomputer Ignition System box by reconnecting the plugs directly to each other. The engine cranked up like a charm and ran fine. The only problem is that the engine won't shut off with the key and I then have to unplug the bypass to shut it off.
Plus, I am assuming that there is some kind of benefit to having the Microcomputer Ignition operating normally, but the **** if I know what it is!

Now, I had a mechanic remove the separate oil reservoire tank and automatic-mechanism a while back ago so I now mix my own fuel into the gas tank at 50:1 because it broke and was not worth it to fix on such an old engine.

I don't think it is the microcomputer unit because I think that if that were the problem, the engine would simply not start at all. Right??

A new ignition box for this engine is $1,300.00 and not worth it.

Can anyone shed some know-how here?? Suggestions?? I know it is an older model, but I'll keep my fingers crossed hoping that you can help. You see, my wife and I have a 2-year old daughter. As you married guys know out there, $1,300.00 bucks ain't gonna cut it with the Mrs. for an old boat when you have a growing baby!

PLEASE HELP!! I haven't fished in weeks and I am showing withdrawal systems!

Alfred

Yaro, I cant for the life of me figure out what could turn off your key switch or how.
NAPA has ser. manuals for your motor should have
wiring diagrams.
Did you use proper switch for outboards?
Most outboards use an open circuit to run and a closed circuit to stop.Start run/stop switch should be easy to hook up with the help of a manual,if you want to by pass
regular set up.

Hi Al,
Sure you can run it that way, but I wouldn't want to disconnect something back at the engine each time that I needed to shut it down. Not only would it be a hassel, but it is somewhat dangerious. I'll do some research and see if I can't help you solve your problem.
Hang tight

Thanks Almost,

It sure would be a great help. I'll keep checking back here often until I get this thing figured out.

Such a strange problem and it seems like it would be easy to figure out, right?

Perhaps if I understood more about how a key switch works on this unit I could solve the problem. I may take the above advice and get myself a shop manual. I'm ripping my hair out on this cause it is so unusual

Thanks again.

Alfred
(Miami)

Laro,
I'm not sure about your Yamaha, but some outboards require a KILL SWITCH HARNESS.If the harness is not attached to key switch(area) the motor will not run.(unless you push in?).Ask your dealer about this for a '84 Yamaha 220... :)
The harness is usually attached somewhere to the control box/shifter.Either that or look for a seperate(toggle?)switch on same....

Re: PLEASE HELP!! IGNITION PROB!!!

Thanks Reel,

I do have a kill switch, but I made sure the harness was in place. but you know, I did not replace the kill switch, only the key switch (which is right above).

you've given me an idea- Could it be possible that the kill switch has gone bad and that even though the harness is in position the circuitry inside the switch itself could be in a permanent "EMERGENCY" kill position? Maybe a ground in there is messed up. I wonder. I'd have to change the kill switch to find out.

But on the other hand now that I think about it,
I DID disconnect the kill switch all together as a test when I took the throttle unit apart and the problem persisted.

Don't know what to do

Alfred
