I had a thermostat quit working in my 89 150 mariner large compression number two cylinder ran great would not idle took motor apart reboard installed new piston put back together and would not run properly first no spark jet put on new stater then would start run rough and idle out of control ended up putting two CDI packs on rectifier and new stater starts in the driveway with muffs put it in the water will start won’t idle or idle is it 3500 RPMs even when you put it back into neutral I have no idea what else could cause that to do that I’ve been on this project four months and when I had the money.Any ideas would be greatly appreciated don’t understand how a motor give me a put into neutral and still rev 3500 RPMs and when it does start and idle normally you put it in gear and you got no power and it dies thank you very much

Please help us..... by using punctuation and check your spelling.
Can't make any sense out of what you posted.

But for starters, do a link n sync on the carbs, and test for air leaks between carbs, manifold, and crankcase.

Sorry about punctuation I sometimes talk my questions and I doesn’t always say what I spoke I didn’t proof read again sorry. I’ve been chasing my tail on this thing, first put into new pistons then if that did not work no fire,I put on a new stater had fire did not work, put on a new rectifier same deal, checked cdi boxes had one that seemed defective now it will start out of the water in fast idle and go into neutral and idle fine, the next time or some it will race up to 3500 rpms in fast idle and when shifted to neutral it stays at 3500 RPMs and I have to shut off the key when it does start OK and put in neutral and you place it in gear and get no RPMs and it dies I have double check the linkages double check the carburetors, the reed block checked the gaskets I have checked everything, and I don’t know what would cause this ,just the only other strange anomaly on this thing is that when it revs way up it causes my motor to trim all the way up,like it’s electrical or something,I don’t know I’m at my wits end,I rebuilt boat motors for years for myself no probs. Boat ran excellent except for that it got hot lost compression in a cylinder and didn’t idle correctly, even with bad cylinder

When I replaced the piston put everything back on could not get to start or run and since then I’ve put a new everything except a trigger, and I just don’t know what else to do I would appreciate any help you have I appreciate your time thank you very very much Lonnie

How would you check for air leaks sir

Yeah, the think/speak/auto type feature on my phone doesn't do well either.

If it is leaking, sucking air into engine, it will be running lean, and cause high revs.
With engine running, spray starting fluid around outside of carbs and manifold.
If it sucks it in, revs should fluctuate.

Motor tilting up?? Sounds interesting. Would start by looking for damaged wiring for trim pump.

I finally got a chance to start the boat and spray starting fluid
all around looking for vacuum leaks.I couldn’t find one,the odd thing I noticed was when I slowly put it in gear and gave it throttle,It began to sputter and very slowly pick up our PMs then all of a sudden it jumped to about 3000 RPMs and I would have to turn off the key, putting it back in neutral would not slow down the RPMs.the carb linkage seemed to be fine, I’m no boat expert but I have worked on and rebuilt a few over the years and this has got me stumped, Would greatly appreciate any thoughts Thank you
