Help guys and gals-I'm on a rented home at the lake and boat has problems. I just completed a swap from the 91 3.0 to an 87 3.0. Motor ran great on muffs for a couple of hours. Put it in lake yesterday for water test and all went well for about 20 minutes. Ran cool, had good power. Went to turn around to head back to ramp and the boat gradually started slowing down. Then it went to popping thru carb and shut down. It will start (won't idle), but now there is a rythmic popping thru the carb, about a pop per second. I did not change last years fuel-I should have. I did install an extra in line fuel filter ( I changed it but it hasn't helped and carb inlet screen is clean)between pump and carb. Compression is good-150 on all 4 cylinders. Carb was rebuilt last year and ran perfect before the problems arose yesterday. When u accelerate the engine, the popping gets faster-faster than the engine revs. I'm going outside now to remove the filter from fuel pump. Sounds like a lean condition to me. Any help or advice is greatly appreciated.

Hook it up to a remote fuel tank (outboard tank) and see if it will run.
Could have water in the system and water in the carb. Won't run on water.

Might want to check valves, camshaft and timing. Make sure distributor is tight and timing is correct first.

OK. I happened to have my compression guage in truck while on vacation. All 4 cylinders checked in at between 130 and 140 psi. However, I have isolated the problem to the #3 cylinder (I removed plug wires one at a time and the popping stopped on cyl #3. Distributor is tight and timing was just set to factory specs prior to going to lake. I have brought boat home and will re check timing, but I feel like this is an issue with the #3 intake valve. Could it have wiped out a cam lobe in about 10 minutes? I will remove valve cover this evening and see what we have. I am confused and frustrated.

I will be digging deeper into it after work today. How do u test valve springs? Do I need to go ahead and remove the cylinder head?

Pull rocker cover and visually check each spring.Hook up a vacuum gauge. This works if you have a rochester 2bbl.Im not sure about the mercarb if same port exists.I used the port that goes to backside of choke assembly.Remove and you'll see a little hole that has vacuum..No need to remove head to change valve springs.I've used compressed air to hold valves up.

I removed valve cover and sure enough, the #3 intake rocker was shifted off of the valve and pushrod. I replaced the rocker and adjusted all 8 valves and it is now running great. I should have adjusted all valves when I did the engine swap and I would have caught the loose rocker nut prior to this problem. I'm heading back to lake to rejoin family tomorrow and I'll update as to how it performs on the water.

I agree, this forum has saved me many headaches. I have always been mechanically inclined and make most of my own repairs, but boats are certainly different. I'm heading to lake as soon as an 11:00 am meeting at work is over. I will update you this evening. Once again, many thanks to the members of this forum.

The boat ran great!! It worked very hard for about 6 hours per day (Wed-Sat) pulling my kids, nieces, and nephews. I am amazed at how economical this engine is. Only burned 10 gallons per day and it ran for at least 6 hours daily. Thanks again to all the advice provided by the members of this forum!
