Good morning guys I have a 1985 35 hp mercury. I just bought it and tested it over 1h on fresh water, ran perfect. Next day I launched it on salt water and it ran perfectly for around 3 minutes then it started dying until it turn off. After that it started a couple of times with starter fluid but it will not accelerate and if I shift to gear it would die again. Until it never started again. Gas was brand new also brand new spark plugs.... Any suggestions?? Thank you in advance

First, a warning. NEVER EVER use starting fluid on a 2 stroke. There is NO lubrication, it can, and will, cause damage to everything, bearings, cyl, pistons rings. Instead use any sort of spray or squirt bottle with pre-mixed two stroke fuel. Like a Windex spray bottle, or anything like the old catsup/mustard pointy squeeze bottles. Anything you can to squirt not even a teaspoon of fuel into the carb throat.

Most likely the carb needs cleaning. It managed to pass fuel one day which may have loosened some of the accumulated muck inside it,Sitting that much may have shifted enough so to restrict the fuel flow enough that it will not run again.

Small motors are very sensitive to small changes in fuel flow. Complete cleaning of the carb should restore the motor to good running. Take great care with the idle mixture setting. Gently screw the needles in while counting the exact number of turns until gently seated. Too hard will bend the needle and distort the seat, ruining both. After cleaning you want to return that needle to the exact same # or turns out from that gently bottomed position. This should be very close to the final running adjustment. Final idle mixture adjustment needs to be done with the motor IN the water and IN gear. The exhaust back pressure and prop load are required for correct adjustment.

A Factory Service Manual will be THE best investment you can ever make for your motor. It will have detailed instructions for every task taking care of and rebuilding your motor should it ever need it.

It didn't overheat.... It was pissing all the time and the water seemed cold enough. I kept checking the temperature everywhere even by hand and seemed normal..... I'm new at this sorry if what I'm doing makes no sense
