Re: Please help !! 1972 65hp evinrude wont stay in gear
I checked your other posts and your problem appears similar to one I recently had and got responses from the same folks (which were very helpful by the way). Going beyond checking voltage to your shift solenoids, pull the knife connectors apart again and check resistance (ohms) on each one with a meter. You don't have to start the motor or even have the battery connected to do this. With one lead of your meter connected to each wire and one conected to ground (clean metal on engine block) each wire should read 5-7 ohms of resistance to indicate the solenoids are working properly. When I had the problem of the boat jumping into and out of gear, I was getting bad readings on resistance and when I pulled off the lower unit, I found that the shift wire had corroded where it runs through the exhaust housing. I replaced both wires (had to make one since I couldn't find one)and everything has been fine since. This is a 1971 100 hp johnson by the way. I have no idea if this is indeed your problem but on engines of similar age with a similar problem, it might be something to look into. Let me know what you find.

Jim
