Hello,

I just purchased a boat with a 1997 Volvo Penta 3.0GS. This weekend while using it the top Water cooling host split and sprayed water all over the engine. The engine was really wet but it all went down into the Bilge so it was not submerged. After I got home i checked the oil and it was "Coffee with Cream" colored. I was planning on doing the following

Drain all the Oil and replace the filter with new oil and filter.
Maybe do this again if the color is not right.

Is this all that need to be done?

Thanks,

Did the engine hydrolock? If so, you need to pull your spark plugs, and crank the engine over, to get the water out of the cylinders.

If not no hydrolock was involved, just get some fresh oil in it, start it up, change the oil again. Rinse, repeat as needed.

Welcome to iboats.

To answer your question, maybe but probably not. The oil in the water is the symptom, you need to find the cause. You can try changing it, run it and then check the oil again. My guess is you think the oil got that way because of the split hose. Possibly but probably not. There may be another problem, possibly exhaust manifold, head gasket, cracked block etc.

Have a great day,

Rob.

It can't have been good for the engine to run with water mixed in the oil, but it's probably fine, as long as you didn't push it very hard on your way back to the dock.

I've run engines completely dry on oil in the past, for a short period of time, and no noticible damage resulted.

Just change it out, and hope for the best. If it's been damaged, it's too late to worry about it now. If it hasn't been damaged, there's no point in worrying about it.

Bottom line: Try not to worry about it, and just see what happens.

My bet is that everything is hunky dory.

Thanks for the reply, I guess you really hit the nail on the head I think I should follow that advice for more things in life.

No use worring about it now.
