Please explain dual props drives...

I'm outside tinkering with stuff for the boat, my neighbor stops by and looks at the boat. He says I really need a dual prop setup for it.

Do I need dual props? Do I want dual props? Is 1250.00 a good price for a dual prop setup(Volvo I think)?

While I'm posting, might as well ask, What are these plastic things bolted on my drive? What do they do? Some call them whale tales. Do I need them? They look like plastic fighter plane wings.

As usual thanks in advance and sorry if my questions are dumb.

A duo prop set-up will get you onto plane faster; will eliminate torque steer and make maneuvering in tight spaces easier.
The whale tale fins purpose is also to get you on plane faster. Since it's already there, just leave it. Many will say that trim tabs do a better job than the fin!

Do you need dual props? No. For your type of boat, a single prop Bravo drive is fine. Do you want dual props? Maybe; there are some advantages.....but.....

You aren't going to go dual prop for $1250.

First of all, fitting a Volvo drive will require lots of expensive parts and labor. Scratch that; not really an option for you unless you want to replace the entire power package.

I think (one of the smart guys needs to confirm/deny this) that on the newer style Bravo drives, you just have to replace the lower to convert to Bravo III (dual prop), but this won't work on your older style Bravo. Again, I'm not 100% sure of this....hopefully Don or one of those guys will chime in. A reman lower will be about $2500, an entire drive closer to $6,000, plus a $900 prop set. Sure, you might be able to find some used stuff on eBay, but it still is going to be an expensive conversion.

I'd leave it alone.

I'd also get rid of that "whale tale" but you'll get different opinions on that.

Thanks for the responses. It clears up a bunch.

The guy that told me I needed the dual props, is the guy that has the dual prop drive for sale for 1250.00.

Well of course you need a dual prop, then! LOL :D

Regarding whale tails and tabs ... a tail might help, or might hurt. They can have varying effects across the scope of boats. Tabs would probably help you, but "how noticeably" is a question that could keep this thread alive for quite a few months.

So what makes you think you can put an unknown Volvo duoprop setup on a Bravo drive?

You don't mention how much of the drive, what model drive, year, gear ratio, nothing. Just that you think it's a Volvo.

That's like saying you are goiing to stick a Ford transmission in your Dodge truck and actually think everything is going to fit.

Cheap aluminum props for a Volvo DP are around $700

Re: Please explain dual props drives...

The guy has the WHOLE volvo drive that he is trying to sell me for my boat. He says I NEED IT. He didn't tell me year, or none of the other info except I Needed it and it is 1250.00 dollars.

If in fact I do need or want it is what I was asking. If putting a volvo DP or Bravo III setup on my boat is worth the cost and headache, Then I would get more details and I would then run the details by you guys. If I can turn a circle in 12ft vs 14ft I have now and pick up a tenth of a sec to plan, it isn't worth the trouble to get more details.

Lets say I bought a boat with no engine and no drive, Would a DP volvo from a 7.4 boat be worth 1250.00, in good shape, of course? If it is a good deal, I was thinking about buying it whether I used it on my boat or not. I would put it up, like I do chevy parts. Never know when you'll need it.
