I'm buying a 17 Mitzi flats skiff, and have that choice of motors. I don't need a fantastic hole shot; good is OK. Your thoughts between the two?

Re: Please compare ETec 60 to Yam 70 4 stroke

I don't see a 70hp offering in the current Yamaha 4-stroke lineup. but there is a 75hp model - I'll use that one for comparison.

Weight: The Etec 60 weighs 240 pounds, the Yamaha F75 weighs 369 pounds. Big difference.

Cylinders: The ETEC is a 2 cylinder, 2-stroke engine, the Yamaha is a 4 cylinder, 4-stroke engine. Makes the reason for the weight difference obvious.

Displacement: The ETEC is 52.7 c.u./863 c.c., the Yamaha is 97 c.u./1596 c.c.

Alternator: The ETEC has a 75 amp alternator, while the Yamaha has only a 25 amp alternator. Big difference.

Warranty: The ETEC has a 3 year, non-declining warranty, the Yamaha has a 3 year limited warranty for pleasure boats and 1 year limited warranty for commercial boats.

C.A.R.B. Rating: Both are 3 star.

Complication: The ETEC has a pretty complicated fuel injection/oil injection/ignition system, the Yamaha has EFI and a double overhead cam valve train. Neither is simple and neither would be expected to be user maintained, even beyond warranty period, by most users.

Service: Not much to be found on the websites for either motor but I believe BRP claims no service for the first three years, while periodic oil changes, etc. would be expected for the Yamaha.

Which one is better? In general, IMO, neither. They are both quality products that can be expected to perform well. It really just depends on what you want in a motor. For your boat, however, there is one issue that I think would be significant - namely that the boat only weighs 560 pounds. That is a very light hull to hang a 369 pound motor on. It is also only rated for 40 - 70 hp.

I would add just one more detail. While the E-tec is a 2 cylinder and the Yammy is a four cylinder, idle smoothness will be much better on the Yammy. But I agree that a heavy motor on a light boat does not seem to make for a comfortable combination.
