One of my baitcast reels bit the dust last weekend and the budget negotiations with She-Who-Must-Be-Obeyed did not go so well. I put in for $160 and ended up with a budget of $60. With such a tight restriction on spending it is imperative that I get the most value for my money. I would appreciate all y'all's opinions on baitcast reels under $60. The primary application for this equipment is jigs and T/ & C/R lizards & plastic worms on a 6.5' medium/heavy graphite rod.

thanks very much,
jtw

Why wouldn't you get a Ambassador 5500 or 6500? They cost about $75-$80 retail, but are almost always on sale for $52-59.99 at one place or another. Use the 5500 for up to 14' test and 6500 if you use mono higher than that.
No, they don't cast as far as a Shimano, but they'll only be a few feet shorter, and they're bullet-proof.

jtexas-- two words Bass Pro!!!! they're starting the big fishing classic sale tomorrow. Lots of good reels within the price you so wisely negotiated. Also if you take an old reel and donate to the kids fishing(highly recommend) you can get an extra amount off of the price of your NEW reel.

Ditto on the ABU! Best bang for the buck. Like the Cap'n said bulletproof. I run a 5500 and it is so versatile I can run 10lb for the steelies and 14lb for the silvers, no difference in performance. Plus I can toss it on my downrigger rod and off to the Sound I go. Check out ebay, you can always find a deal or two there.

Jtex -

Best bet is to dump ol' She-Who-Must-Be-Obeyed , give her half of everything, now you have $80.00 for the reel instead of $60. ;)

thanks for the input everbody, especially mooner. visited the Bass Pro Shops spring sale - they had a sidewalk sale on Saturday where I picked up a $150 Daiwa s-series for $50! Took the wife along, and using that special "female shopping logic" spent half the savings on other necessities like maps, a compass, scale, lures, etc. Doesn't she still owe me $50? she said something about shoes... ;)

The abu garcia 4600 c3's are awesome. Smooth, reliable and a thing of beauty. $60 or less.
