Play in steering

I have a 1975 Tahiti with a Mercruiser 120 I/O alpha 1 outdrive with excess play in the (steering 1/4 turn). The shaft that comes from the outdrive to the cable is solid (no play), the cable moves with any movement of the outdrive but the steering wheel stays still. Do I need a new rack/pinion/cable or is there a way to adjust this?
Thanks,
Scot

PS Anyone with experience replacing a transom on a boat like this please let me know. Just did stringer/floor, transom is next.

Re: Play in steering

Scot, some R&P systems have an adjustment screw, some do not. if you have one, you can adjust it and see if it makes any difference. If you have as much play as you state, I would be surprized if the adjustment fixes it.

Replacement R&P systems are under $200 with the cable.
