plastic prop for Honda 2HP

I am the proud new owner of a 1989 Honda 2HP. I bought it for my canoe. I had my maiden voyage with it recently and it performed very well "except" for the propellor. It came with a plastic prop and when I ventured 25 mile downstream from my car, I must have hint a rock or something and broke off one of the three blades. I was able to run it with two blades to get help but I'm sure that wasn't good on the bearing. Does anyone know where I can get a metal prop(7.25x4.75) or if there is any reason I shouldn't put one on it? I bought a new plastic one from Honda but can't find an aluminum or stainless replacement. I have access to a person that I think can make a mould for aluminum from the plastic but haven't priced it yet. Any help would be appreciated.

I think I would just carry a spare to be sure I coulds get out of trouble.
If its a square stern I would think you could raise the motor to a point almost even with the bottom of the transom.Even if a side mount you could raise it just be sure there is room so if you turn hard blade doesn't hit the boat.

.....considering the light weight of the engine, I would be inclined to believe a non-metallic propeller would be perferred to prevent impact damage.
Just carry a spare prop.

Re: plastic prop for Honda 2HP

Thanks for the comments. I had a spare prop ordered when I left on my trip.I figure it was on my front porch as the one on the motor was breaking. That was frustrating. So you think maybe Honda used a plastic prop to protect the lower unit? It has a shear pin. I much rather replace pins than $35.00 props. I know thats cheap for a prop but pins are only $2.00. It does set three or four inches lower than it needs to. I'm using a side mount that a friend made for me out of aluminum. Maybe I can modify it so the prop sets higher. Any more ideas? Thanks again.

Ah-Ha.....now the truth comes out !!!:D

Your bad for going downstream with a damaged prop and no spare onboard!!!!

If the blade broke off without shearing the pin...well, it was just hanging on by a thread.

Regarding the motor height: By all means raise the unit as high as you can before cavitation and/or hull interference.

The prop looked like new when I entered the river. That is what concerns me. It appears the shear pin isn't doing its job. The only reason I ordered a spare is I didn't trust one made of plastic. I do think I will try raising the height. It will help keep me busy through the Indiana winter. Thanks again.

...didn't realize you were that far North and West...kinda cool out there by now, I guess.

I have noticed that I nick my plastic trolling motor prop more in the colder months than warmer ones. I dismiss it as the plastic has lost some of its flexibility in the colder water. Luckily, my trolling motor is shock-mounted and I am yet (knock-knock) to damage a prop beyond repair.

Kinda repeating myself here.....don't bother re-inventing the wheel...just carry a spare prop.:):):)
