Does anyone know what year Mariner switched from the plastic to metal oil injection gear?? I've got a 1991 BassCat Sabre with '91 Mariner 175 and was just wondering.

Re: Plastic gear

I thought I had read somewhere that the drive gear was changed from plastic to metal, but it could have been some aftermarket part that is available to replace the plastic gear. I can't remember for sure.

Re: Plastic gear

I always thought a Brass gear would've been a better choice, but I'm sure they tried dozens of materials and settled on the most cost-effective. That criteria would include possible failures that would have to be paid for under warranty. Paying for trashed powerheads isn't cheap for any company.

Re: Plastic gear

the only times I ever see the plastic fail is on an overheat or longterm storage with no extra oil. the driven gear will rust and then chew up the gear. almost every chewed gear has rust pits/marks on the driven gear.
