Planting Taters ?

I remember years ago when my grandparents were alive that they had a certain date and time of planting potatoes. I was about 7 or 8, but I know they had a superstition about when to plant them. Seems to me it had something to do with the moon and which way the eye of the spud was placed in the ground.

Has anyone else heard or know of this? I'm preparing to grow some this year and thought it would be an experiment to see if it does make a difference or not. Thanks for any input.........SS

I think , its underground plants are planted in the dark of the moon and above ground plants in the light of the moon. But I may have it in reverse

Actually, you're a little late, should've been planted long ago.

Remember, turn the eyes down. You don't want to step on them.

Re: Planting Taters ?

in my area taters are planted in late feb early march. my grandfather also used the almanac and moon sign to plant as well as the eyes not only faced up but north.
man I hate planting taters:) :) .
thats why I have no garden, I can fix a few motors and go to seamark :) .
if I plant it it dies, I put out 100lbs of grass seed in a 100x150 lot and got weeds.

Dang, it must be nice to have a early growing season. Heck, tuesday and wednesday night we was back into the mid 20's. :( Getting real tired of feeding the wood burner. The experts around here says that May 10th is our day to plant since that is when danger of frost is over with.

I'm going to try planting some down by the creek bank this year. Lots of rich sandy loam and full sun. I just need to find a place for my tomatoes now. Seems like I have a walnut tree in just about every good location for a garden. Planting tomatoes by walnut trees is surpose to be bad for the plants. Something about fungus or something, at least that is what the experts say.

Thanks for the info.....now to wait for a different moon phase to put out some more taters.

SS
ever wonder why ya had to get older to realize how smart your grandparents were?
my grandfather could grow about anything, cure his own meats and fish in the smoke house, build a house and put pistons in his truck.
he built the house I live in in 1955 with lumber that was timbered here on the property. I have sat here in 100 plus MPH winds and the windows wont even creak.
but as he had no college education and retired as a CWO4 from the USCG in 48 by todays standards he would be ignorant.
