Been there. If you plan on getting a cabin in the park you better book now. I stayed in the cabins at Roosevelt lodge back in 1998 when I was out. They are nice, running water electric, toilet etc etc. There is a lot to see in the park 5 days should be enough time. I usally stay three days. In my opinion the Tetons right next to the park are way better. We stay at Jackson lake lodge when we go there. The place is great and the views are awesome. Also you can fish the lake. Make sure you venture down to Jackson hole and party at least one night, stop at the Million dollar cowboy bar. If you have time swing up to Cody and check out the Irma hotel, great buffet. Than head north up the beartooth pass into Red lodge Montana you will be glad you did, the views are unreal. That oughta keep ya busy. :)

By all means get your booking done now for this summer. Last week was not soon enough.

I was there two years ago--camping--and I'll give some thought to what was good and get back to you.

Question. How active do you like to be?

Jinx

Thanks Flahthead and Jinx

This is what I have booked so far.

Fly into Jackson Hole on 29th of july and stay that night at jackson lake lodge with a balcony view.

Next day mess around the Tetons? But I have no idea what to do?

Late afternoon drive up to Old Faithful lodge and stay there in a room with a view the 30th and 31st. I have got an idea of what to do here.

Drive up to Mammoth Lodge on the 1st of August and stay at Mammoth Lodge cabin with Hottub the 1st through the 3rd. Could use some pointers on where to go.

Jinx I have been hiking my whole live but lately I have been really lazy and getting fat. I would suspect we can handle around hiking 5 miles a day with out any problem. Also wanted to know if it's worth taking a guided fishing trip on the lake while I was there? :D

Fly out of Bozeman on the 4th.

There is a trail that goes to the top of Mt. Washburn. It is an old Forest Service access road so the grades are not like the Matterhorn.

It is known for the wildflowers, and you will be there at the right time of the year for their peak, if that interests you.

If you make it to the top have a coat, because it is windy and cold up there.

Let me give some more thought to this.

Jinx

Re: Planning a trip to Yellowstone

Trollhole we rented a boat right down the road from Jackson lake lodge. Did not catch any fins but the water was clear as could be and you could see huge trout in the water. You are gonna love that balcony view room, I hope the skys are clear for you. A bunch of moose hang right out behind the lodge. They used to have a cowboy chuck wagon cook out at Teton, all the steak you could eat :D .

Over at Mammoth you will see the springs of course and you can drive from there to Cooke city montana in no time. This little town is (at least it was) really a step back in time. Not much there though. If the wife likes to shop take the west exit of the park into West Yellowstone Montana. Great town with lots of nice stores.

You may find that the trip up to Boozeman might be your favorite part of the trip. Weather you take 191 or 89 over the Gallatin range the road is really nice.

If this is your first trip out west you are going to love it.

Re: Planning a trip to Yellowstone

I've boated and camped there two years in a row, it's just great. I camped at Grant Village which is near a ramp on West Thumb of Yellowstone Lake.
I was able to get reservations at Grant Village a month before, we went in August both times.
I drove up into the south entrance which takes you to Grant Village. Grant village has an RV dump, RV pull through sites and tent sites. There are showers, laundry and a store. Also three restaurants. When calling they ask the size of your rig and always tell you it is too big. My 22' cuddy and full size crew cab fit with room to spare in the pull throughs. Other campers with massive RVs also fit. It's not a problem, don't tell them how big your rig really is.
Boating on Yellowstone requires a permit which you can get right there. The lake is just beautiful. Waterskiing is not allowed, nor are pwc's. Dumping in the lake is strictly prohibited. You can boat camp on the shores of Yellowstone, you need a back country permit to do that. I forget if you can only camp in designated areas if boat camping. You should do your boating and fishing in the morning and plan on getting off the lake around 11:00 am. The wind makes it pretty rough and a hazard for small craft. I didnt have any problems, but it got too rough for any enjoyment.
There is a marina onlake, and lots of coves to check out. There are big no wake zones to be aware of, the ranger will make sure you know where they are when you get your permit. I think the permit is 12 bucks or so.
Of course there is so much to see off the lake, and we take the bikes to ride the bike trails. Kids love it.
I highly recommend Yellowstone it's just a great place to take the family. Feel free to e mail me with questions.
