Re: Planning a trip to Yellowstone
I've boated and camped there two years in a row, it's just great. I camped at Grant Village which is near a ramp on West Thumb of Yellowstone Lake.
I was able to get reservations at Grant Village a month before, we went in August both times.
I drove up into the south entrance which takes you to Grant Village. Grant village has an RV dump, RV pull through sites and tent sites. There are showers, laundry and a store. Also three restaurants. When calling they ask the size of your rig and always tell you it is too big. My 22' cuddy and full size crew cab fit with room to spare in the pull throughs. Other campers with massive RVs also fit. It's not a problem, don't tell them how big your rig really is.
Boating on Yellowstone requires a permit which you can get right there. The lake is just beautiful. Waterskiing is not allowed, nor are pwc's. Dumping in the lake is strictly prohibited. You can boat camp on the shores of Yellowstone, you need a back country permit to do that. I forget if you can only camp in designated areas if boat camping. You should do your boating and fishing in the morning and plan on getting off the lake around 11:00 am. The wind makes it pretty rough and a hazard for small craft. I didnt have any problems, but it got too rough for any enjoyment.
There is a marina onlake, and lots of coves to check out. There are big no wake zones to be aware of, the ranger will make sure you know where they are when you get your permit. I think the permit is 12 bucks or so.
Of course there is so much to see off the lake, and we take the bikes to ride the bike trails. Kids love it.
I highly recommend Yellowstone it's just a great place to take the family. Feel free to e mail me with questions.
