Plaining vs. displacement

Ok guys,

I know it's a silly question, but would I save any gas at all if on a rather long trip (approx 25 miles) I would go in a displacement mode (1500-2000 rpm) rather then plaining (at 3600 rpm)?

My motor is 5.7 OMC Cobra.

Thanks.

Re: Plaining vs. displacement

you will usally get the most MPG with the boat up on plane somewear between 3000 to 3600 RPM

Every boat is different so it takes some trail and error or a flow meter to find the best speed

I agree with tommays with one semi-ridiculous exception. Almost all test data I have seen shows that the absolute best fuel efficiency (MPG) is at idle. This will be around 3 MPH so plan for a 10 hour journey . . . ;)

The 1500 - 2000 area is usually the worst as most boats are trying to plane and past true displacement (hull) speed.

If you don't mind displacement mode and slower speeds, get a small outboard and hang it on back. Maybe 15 or 20 hp and you will probably only burn one or two gallons an hour.

I agree, on plane about 3000rpm - 3200rpm, with your engine tilted up slightly ... best fuel consumption

Trailer Boats Magazine did this test a few years ago.

They found as QC stated. The best fuel economy is dead slow (idle).

Next best is "just on top" planing.

It is also important to adjust your trim for maximum mileage. On my boat, and all my previous boats I got my best economy by just gettting on plane and then adjusting the trim so I would just start to porpoise and then back it down just a bit to stop porpoising. This is the best for me and has been substantiated by a fuel flow meter. Good Luck
