I recently inherited a 92 bayliner cobra fishing boat. I went to change the lower unit oil a d accidentally pulled the pivot pin out instead of the drain plug. I only have forward gear. Can I line it back up with out removing the lower unit? If so anyt tricks.

Thanks

Pure luck to line it up once you remove it, especially if you've moved the throttle handle which moves the gear shift rod in the lower unit. The fact that you only have Forward gear means that the gear shift coupler which moves the shifting yoke it most likely out of wack and no longer engaged on the pivot pin. Most likely you will have to remove the lower unit.

You might be able to do it without removing the lower unit, but you will have to remove the whole propeller shaft assy. to access the gear shift coupler to position it to get the pivot pin back through it.

Easier to remove the lower unit and take the top plate off and look straight down to position the gear shift coupler to get the pivot pin through it.

Captain,
Thanks for the response.definatley not what I was wanting to hear.haha.live and learn I guess. I have a manual for repairs is it as hard as it looks in the manual to pull the lower unit?anything I should replace while I'm in there if I have to go that route?

Pretty easy to drop the lower unit. There are 7 bolts that hold it in place. 6 of the bolts are visible and easily accessed. 3 on each side of the lower unit. The 7th bolt is covered by the trim tab. The trim tab is held in place with two bolts Once you remove it, look up into the cavity where it was, and you'll see the 7th bolt. Re-installing the lower unit is a bit trickier. You have to get the male splines on the end of the drive shaft to line up properly with the female splined hole in the crankshaft before it'll go back in.

Ok.thank you. I'm not sure when I'll be able to dive into this as I just started maintenance schooling on top of working my swing shift job. Hopefully it's before my next weekend off

So after some research I've found there's a brass piece that likely fell free when I removed the pin....is that correct for this motor?it's a 92

Your link didn't work. But I think I got this. Remove seven bolts in lower pull fitter pin on shift linkage.drop lower find part , connect pivot pin and linkage, replace impeller while I'm in then.reinstall.correct?

There's one step that you missed. You have to remove the top plate on the lower unit to see inside where the shift yoke and and gear shift coupler are located and get everything lined back up and re-inset the pivot pin. The top cover I believe has an "O" ring type rubber seal which can be re-used if it's in good shape. Be very careful when removing the top plate. It's thin pot metal and is easily broken if you pry too hard in one spot. If you break it, it's a show stopper. You also probably need to drain the gear oil out so you can see the shift yoke and gear shift coupler.

Have a picture of said plate? I have a manual but it's not very descriptive with pictures.to line everything up is it pretty straight forward? If I'm stuck in forward where should I put gear selector?

I really appreciate everyone's help with this.if my grandfather was here this would've never happened.

You don't have to remove the cover.
It's a PITA but can be done through the lower gear housing.
I find it easier to pull the shaft than removing that cover then trying to reseal it :)
Remove the bearing carrier and prop shaft.
But if you do remove the shift shaft cover you'll need to pressure test the unit cause that plate is a B to reseal.

You lost me....lol.are you talking about the cover for the impeller or cover to access the shift linkage down below is a pain to reseal?

I believe it's an o-ring on a 92.
boats dot net has parts diagrams for your motor.
This site sells some Force parts.

Is there a youtube link that will show the process of replacing the pin. I added silicone over the head of the pin on my 35 HP Chrysler in 1984 after reading that some were pulled accidentally.
