hello everyone, i have a 1976 evinrude 35 hp electric start. i have been working on it from sitting for 5+ years non running well i got it started today and it ran good but when i shut it off due to no water flow. i looked it over and wanted to see if it would at least crank again before i went and bought an impeller and the plate under the magneto that turns when throttle is applied well it turn clockwise and broke the pivot pin on the throttle linkage. also what is suppose to stop that from turning too far or is there some other issue i will post pics soon tonight.

you can see in the first two pictures of the broken pivot pin and the linkage laying there. then in the third shows how far it spun around and broke the pivote pin it was wedged against the shift lever there. and the last picture shows where its suppose to be.

Pull the flywheel and fix the linkage. That is what advances your spark and on a 2 cycle outboard it is as important as your throttle.

i dont need to pull the flywheel and i planned on fixing it im looking for the underlining problem that caused the plate to move so far around and break the pin.

Did anything come loose under the flywheel causing the armature plate to spin ??

no but this plate is meant to turn but only so far. i think it might just be that the piot pin broke but this plate slammed around when it went. so im unsure of reason ive looked pin is my only idea.

Try replacing the pin, try it and see what happens.

yeah that was what i had hoped it was but at the same time im afraid that tiny 11 dollar part will break again hopefully the last one was just weak and old.

Check to make sure the magneto plate is properly seated and not loose enough to hit the flywheel. Also, double check that the trigger and charge coil are seated properly and not loose or hitting.
