"Pitted gear" question

I have been told that I have a "pitted and very barely cracked" gear in the lower unit. This was discovered after water was discovered in the lower unit and the seals were being replaced on a 200 HP Johnson 1998. My question is: How big a deal is that one (apparently there are two forward gears) of the gears is "pitted" and has very fine cracks on it. Can I still run it? Do most motors have very fine stress cracks on the gears? Or is this just another $500.00 expenditure. I have an extended warranty..should I just run it until it totally blows out and get a brand new lower unit when the gear breaks and destroys everything in the bottom end?? I need another dose of expert advise.....thanks again in advance..you guys are the best

Can you walk home when it leaves you stranded?

Under extended warranty they will most likely replace the complete gearcase rather than rebuilding it anyway. This is why you paid big bucks for the extended warranty. Take advantage of it. And it's OK to point out to everyone how smart you were for getting it.

Good luck!

Yeah, I have tow insurance too so when it breaks bad I have a free tow.....but in all honesty..how long do you think it'll last before "she blows sky high"?

Heck if you have a warranty on it, I would have it all fixed right now!! If it runs until JUST AFTER your warranty runs out. It will hurt.

On another note, I have never heard of a cracked gear. They are usually either good or shattered as they are hardened steel. I have replaced alot of gears and never seen one cracked to where it could break at any time. Maybe that is a first though.

Best of luck!!

I have 3 years left on the warranty. I think Ill just run her till she blows and then get the WHOLE new package..they might not replace a "pitted gear", but they'll replace a lower unit when the gear gives way
