Pinion gear removal---nut has been removed

Hi All,

I am taking apart my lower unit on a 1976 115hp Johnson (115ETL76G). I have the service manual and have made it so far to the point where I have removed the pinon nut (part 0314730); however, the pinion gear will not drop out. The service manual simply says to remove the pinion gear without elaborating.

Is there a trick that I am missing? I've seen this advice elsewhere in this forum: http://forums.iboats.com/showpost.php?p=1558847&postcount=18 but that looks like it can cause more harm than good.

Thanks a bunch in advance for any help!

-ps. I'll fill you all in later tonight with the juicy details of why I'm digging into the lower unit! :/

Well you could whack it with something cheaper than the prop shaft. I use a piece of brass rod that I have. Easier on the pinion gear too. The pinion is a tapered fit on the drive shaft. Just takes a bit of persuasion to knock the tapers apart. Some books say to use a fancy drive shaft yanker-outer tool.
