I am not sure if this is a big problem or not. I had to replace the clutch dog in my 1976 40hp johnson. The problem is while the lower unit of the gearcase was not attached the bearings fell out of the pinion bearing housing because my wife made me move the boat. My question is is how do you get the housing out so I can put the bearings back in, or do I have to get a new one all together.?

Re: Pinion Bearing

Any chance of sticking them back in with some grease using a pair of (SWMBO's eyebrow) tweezers. Or is the drive shaft in the way.

If you cannot do that or pull the shell out then its a LU off, tear down and drive it out job I reckon.
(you were going to change the pump impeller and the drive shaft seals anyway weren't you?)

If you have all the rollers once you see the price of a new one you'll put the old one back together. If you've lost any then SWMBO will have to skip her next couple of visits to the hairdressers to pay for the new one!

If you are talking about the Lower pinion bearing (1/4" diameter rollers) they are loose pack rollers. Just stick them back in with some grease to hold them, no need to remove the shell. There are supposed to be enough to fill the shell with not enough room to add another one. But if you are talking about the Upper pinion bearing (much thinner rollers), the rollers aren't supposed to come out and if they did, the whole bearing has to be replaced.

EDIT: I just checked the book, and it looks like they found a way to make it cheaper. The upper pinion bearing that was used for so many years is no longer shown. So I reckon we don't need to be concerned about that one, huh? I'm sort of shocked that they saw fit to eliminate it.
