Pilot Whale mass beaching

Several Pilot Whales beached themselves in North Carolina. Scientists are baffled by this phenomena that leaves whole pods of whales dead. What have you heard as possible causes? They never seem to find biological explanations such as disease. Could our naval sonar devices be messing them up? Or might they have simply been in the shallows and got trapped by a receeding tide? What causes such a tragic thing?

I could be wrong. But I bet there are historical reports of this happening long before sonar tech. Er...just a gut feeling....

Terrific, we have the technology that eliminates sea life, and Bin Laden is still on the loose.
