Pigtail melting, HELP!

I hate to admit it, but I have no idea what is causing this to happen. I bought a 1997 toyota tocoma and it came with a pigtail allready on it. Well when I bought a boat I assumed that all was well. After two uses on the boat the truck blew a stop light fuse. so I passed it off as nothing, after the second fuse blowed I got worried. I had bought new lights allready for the tralier and put them on thinking that it might be that. and I put another fuse in, well instead of blowing the fuse it
melted the pigtail! the lights still work fine but the pigtail is useless. My truck has a box under the back for the pigtail. I don't know if that is it or even what it is, but the pigtail is hooked into it. I need to know what to do, where to take it and if I just need to replace the pigtail. I am lost and I LOVE my boat and truck! Thanks for all your help. By the way the lights on the trailer is
foolproof with color codes and the lights are grouned good to the trailer. Again thanks for all the help!

The box you refer to is likely a 4 to 2 bulb converter. It is possible it went bad....

Does the fuse blow even when the trailer is not hooked up?

Re: Pigtail melting, HELP!

the part that is burnt is the auctual part that plugs into the female part of the trailer, the black part it is what is melted.

Re: Pigtail melting, HELP!

Did you replace all the wires when you installed the new lights?

Sounds like a wire is worn thru or pinched somewhere and making contact with the trailer. From what you said, it may be the brake light wire. When you use the brakes, it grounds out, causing lots of current to flow thru the wire.

Re: Pigtail melting, HELP!

The only wire that I didn't replace was a small one that is only 2 feet across the back that connects the left light to the right. It's straight and shouldn't be kinked. I will check it again to be sure.
