That bearing has not seen grease in ages. Heat and a 3-jaw gear puller will likely be necessary. New races, bearings and seals are definitely in order.

Is that a stub axle? If you in for a penny get in for the pound and re-do the axle too. New stub axles are a few bucks more but then everything will be new and done right.

If your bearings are that bad chances are the axle is worn.

I would try spraying it with pb blaster or such and use a big puller.

Do a lot of old farm equipment work. Amazing what heat will do.

Problem with your task is that there is rubber involved (seal), and maybe hub paint, and you will make a big smoky mess. May want to do it outside with a water hose handy.

You'll need to get her really hot; smoking hot, (grease will be smoking along with the other stuff) and smack with a sledge on the rear or use the puller, or both would be better.

Impact from the sledge is necessary to jar it loose and the puller will help get it moving once jarred. Put the puller on it initially, and keep testing it for tightness while you're a cookin. You'll make it.

If the races won't come out (once you get it off), more heat and smack in the normal fasion.

Wear gloves so you don't grab it hot before your brain registers what you did.....BTDT.

The casting will take couple thousand degrees before it turns red so don't expect to see it red like you'd see cold rolled steel. Should separate B4 you get that hot....too hot.

HTH,

Mark
