Pickup / Camper / Boat

I have a pop/up pickup camper and a new Arima boat that I would like to use with a larger truck than I currently have. I plan on buying a F-250 to pack the camper and pull the boat. It all seems so natural to do this but nothing is as simple as it looks! I am looking for advice, opinions and pitfalls of both towing a boat and having a camper on a truck at the same time before I buy a truck. ANY AND ALL replys would be greatly appreciated and considered when and if I make this move.

I'd suggest getting the V10 engine and the camper package on the pick-up. I believe it's only a few hundred bucks more for the extra weight carrying capacity that the camper package provides. You shouldn't have any problems towing with that truck. How big/heavy is the boat?

Make sure you get all the available towing options especially the heavy duty suspension. What is going to happen here is the rear end will have a lot of weight on it and you don't want anything to be stressed needlessly.

check with the Ford Dealer I bought a F350 4x4 XLT for 27,750 got all the heavy stuff with the V10 tows great. My combo weighs in unoffcially at about 9500 with pulse breaks cant tell its back there. Shifting is a bit slow. I would get the 6 speed xmsn but I HAD to buy right then, cause of a major breakdown. You will most likely need to order yours to get the 6 speed the way u want the truck. Just not many out there. I"m Pleased with mine

Ironic, I just started "dreaming" of such a setup this past weekend. I would aim at the 1-ton size vs. 3/4 ton and if it wouldn't be too wide for daily driving get a dually. With all that weight on the rear, you don't won't to overload the tires. Another concern is does your truck camper extend beyond the bumper? If so, be sure you got lots of "beef" in the receiver extension.

Just curious, but what pop-up truck camper do you have? I like the looks of the Alaskan but the price of the Starcraft.

I have a Phoenix pop-up camper and just love it. It fits in a short bed and is relatively light at 1100 lbs.

Checked their website and the Phoenix's look great. Now, if I could just win the lottery and buy a big F350!

From what I hear the Ford 6.0 diesel has a lot of problems. Get a Dodge diesel..you can tow a battleship.

Or a chevy deisel. Better than both ford or dodge.

Well I saw it at the top. Thought I might add my 2 cents worth just for the heck of it. If it wasn't at the top I wouldn't have touched it.

Re: Pickup / Camper / Boat

My Dad had a pickup camper. Both pop-up and a big "hang over the bed 3 ft" model with full kitchen, full shower/head and two full double beds. All on a pickup. Towing a fully loaded utility trailer (wxlxh = 8x10x6) with gally and storage weighing in (my guess) around 1000 lbs fully loaded with water, food, bottled gas, tents, and all the camping gear (it was a rolling kitchen with storage). That is what we needed for a family of 6.

My Dad spent a lot of time choosing what truck to order new. That was a real big deal at the time. He ordered the one ton with posi and granny trans because that was rated to haul his combo setup. Total towing package (trailer and camper) must have been well over 3500 lbs.

The truck was a 1 ton 1975 Chevy pickup with "granny trans" and 350 4 barrel 2 wheel drive. NOT dual rear wheels, but with posi. And it had anchors on the exterior sides of fleet-side bed to anchor the camper to (with turnbuckels in the middle, to tighten the whole thing down)

That combo when through everything except soft deep sand. And it was a bit tippy. Dad always slowed down on sharp turns. The granny trans pulled the rig out of some steep, dark, unpaved camp grounds. We spent lots of time at the outer banks (before all the developemnt) in NC and drove over sand or gravel roads to pull the rig near spitting distance of the water.

That truck hauled that stuff up and down the east coast from NJ to GA over and over again for years cruising at a steady 65 on the highway at a whopping 11 mpg.

If I remember correctly, that 350 was only rated 180 hp at the time. Could be wrong.

The truck later pulled a 28 ft 5th wheel camper with no problems at all.

My point is a 350 v8 will probably do you just fine with the appropriate engine cooling (and auto transmission cooling if you go auto) and rear axle ratio. Think 3.7 or higher numeric rear.

Remember: towing is towing is towing. Righ hp, right gear ratio, right cooling, right alternator, right spring capcity and it will do what you want. Too big and it will become a big expense.

Have fun!

A chevrolet silverado 2500HD with the Duromax deisel and allison trans is just about the perfect towing rig.
