I bought a shiney new loadrite 6000 pound trailer, comes with a 14" tire. the FAQ says ball hight of 21-22 inches. Is that fully loaded or empty? Am I supposed to guess how much the back of the truck is going to go down after the trailer is on, or is there some sort of a formula? I'm thinking the tongue will probably weigh about 500 pound when the boat is on, but I dont want to run and buy a bunch of receivers just to try it out.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, it's my first boat and first trailer and first trailer hitch. Thanks

Re: picking up new trailer on monday...HELP me

The ball height will vary depending upon the tow vehicle's suspension. I suspect that the 21-22" ball height gives a level trailer, nothing more.

My advise would be either buy an adjustable draw hitch that lowers and raises, or simply get a draw bar that will give you 21-22" with the truck unloaded. If your tow vehicle drops enough to cause concern I would say that there is too much trailer not enough truck.

So in conclusion :) I would just get a draw bar that puts you around 21-22" with truck unloaded.

Hiya Bandit...

The hitch shop near me has all sorts of draw-bars laying around. They sold me one...let me take it and try it...with the priveledge of returning/swapping it out if it was too high or low. Hopefully you have such a resource near you?

Otherwise, maybe this link from e-trailer will help?

http://www.etrailer.com/faq/ballmount.asp

As for figuring how much your truck will lower when the trailer is attached...get a couple of friends to stand on the bumper...that should give you a pretty goosd idea; eh? <<grin>>

Thanks for reading...and good luck!

Chuck

I had a similar problem a month ago. I was picking up a new trailer in FL, 1000 miles away. I went to Walmart and bought 3 different draw bars and then returned the 2 that were not right!
