Hi.

Thought I would introduce myself since I'm sure I'll be on here quite a bit as I get this 58 Johnson Seahorse 18 back up and running. It will power a Carolina Skiff J12 - hopefully better than my Merc 9.9.

I found the "Top Secret" files which proved helpful in removing the flywheel. The coils (very cracked) and spark plug wire connections are shot. So, I have all the parts to replace the coils, condensors, points, wires. I'm also going to clean the carb. Also got some new "o" rings for the pressure tank.

Anything else I should do or be aware of?

Regards.

Sounds like you will have your hands full for a little while, but, you might take a look at the impeller when you get the chance and also check the gear oil in the lower unit. None of this stuff is that difficult to do, just take your time and you will have a great motor there.

Did you get wire-core wires? That's the only kind to use.

Welcome.

Then 57-58 18's were the best motors built. Before you do anything, take a compression test and make sure it's even worth puting a dime into, though. Make sure the readings are within 10% of each other. If either of the two cylinders is low in compression, then the motor will not ever run smoothe, even with a new ignition system in it.
